M Night Shyalamayaran Has Made The Ultimate 9/11 Movie

A while back I wrote about The Mist and what I called 9/11 movies, which I defined as movies about disasters that focused almost pornographically on the fact that the main characters are completely in the dark about what’s going on. There were some (Boonville Blog‘s Jeff Egnaczyk) who were skeptical about this concept, but finally the perfect man for the job, M. Night Shatamaran* has proved me correct by releasing a movie called The Happening, which, according to the preview that I just saw, consists of 39% people asking ‘What’s happening?’, 40% people saying ‘I don’t know what’s happening.’ and 20% people watching Youtube videos of hilarious ways to commit suicide. I assume the remaining 1% will be the unsatisfying Twilight Zone ending, in which it’s ‘The Earth’s immune system getting rid of the biggest threat to life on Earth’ or something ridiculous like that.

Nonetheless, yeah, great job capturing the zeitgeist, N. Might Shalomar.

*I am too lazy to look up his name, so rather than doing so I am resorting to the hackneyed ‘repeatedly misremember the name in increasingly less accurate ways’ gag. My dad would be proud.

  1. Ah, but The Twilight Zone has beaten you to it with The Monsters are Due on Maple Street. All machines suddenly lose power and everybody freaks out. I remember this from when I was a kid (reruns).

And I was only skeptical because I wasn’t sure what your criteria was.

  2. Saw it last night, and, lo, but you were exactly right. I didn’t see any of the promos, just to see if the movie could surprise me even a little. But I’m telling you, the writing on this was so stunningly bad… to the point of, “Oh, look, a car!” just as the car actually pulls up. It was AWFUL.

  3. BTW, Cloverfield is still, for my money, the ultimate 9/11 movie.
